The pandemic reshaped how young minds connect — dance floors went silent, peer spaces moved online, and subcultural symbols dispersed.
Using Nvidia’s StyleGAN2 and latent space interpolation, we trained the network on portraits of TOYTOY patrons to create fluid, quasi-stop-motion digital dances. The machine enacts movement, juxtaposing the warm fluidity of the human form with the cold, mechanical structures of post-pandemic society.
A digital celebration of TOYTOY’s memories, rituals, and enduring underground community, imagining what it means to dance, connect, and belong in a transformed world.
CREATURE
In post-pandemic Johannesburg, the underground electronic scene has transformed — and so have its people. “Creatures” are those shaped by the rave: bodies, minds, and movements altered through music, energy, and community. The term captures a shared consciousness, a collective archetype of the “true” raver.
This series transforms portraits into otherworldly beings using SFX, generative AI, and digital post-production — reflecting the tension between organic human form and the technocratic digital world.
